"Our community works hard to protect its rural and wild character. The Land and Water Conservation Fund has been a big help in doing that. America benefits when it invests in clean water, productive land and wildlife habitat. I support full funding of the LWCF. It's a small investment with a very big dividend."

A side note: the House isn’t defunding only Planned Parenthood.

Call me crazy, but I’m pretty sure House Republicans are riling us up about Planned Parenthood to distract us from other bullshit they are pulling. They don’t want us to be loud and angry while we point out how weak and pathetic their proposed budget cuts actually are; no, they want us to be loud and angry about Planned Parenthood and about abortion, while they quietly sneak around pulling tons of other shit on us.

I know we’re all vehemently pro-choice. I like to think that we also consider things like poverty, equal access, education, and the environment crucial issues, so I’d like to draw a bit of attention to another gigantic dick move the Republicans are trying to pull (one of many), and also note that the House still has yet to vote on the underlying spending bill before sending it to the Senate. So here is one example of something that’s hidden in there - they are trying to defund the Land and Water Conservation Fund by approximately 90%. First they wanted to zero it out entirely. Now they are proposing it be funded at a paltry $59 million or so - the fund is authorized to receive $900 million/year. It has never been fully funded.

  • Fact: The LWCF is not funded by taxpayer dollars. It is ALREADY PAID FOR by oil drilling receipts - and a very small percentage of those receipts as well. Funding the LWCF does not cost the taxpayer anything. Defunding it does not save money.
  • Fact: If funded at the level proposed, there will be no available federal resources for new LWCF projects.
  • Fact: LWCF projects have included saving land in the Everglades, the Cascade Mountains in Washington, Gettysburg and Valley Forge battlefields, Martin Luther King Jr.’s birth home, and the 9/11 Flight 93 memorial. It also funds the projects that support the creation of parks for inner-city youths, and playgrounds for children.

Like the Planned Parenthood amendment, defunding LWCF is a straight-up attack on resources that HELP PEOPLE. I have written my Representative not only to express my dismay on the attack on Planned Parenthood, but to express that I think the entire proposed budget is a crock of fucking bullshit and filled with scams like this one.

I think a lot of other people are contacting their Representatives and Senators right now too, because the Planned Parenthood amendment is infuriating, scary, and horrifying. I’m thinking maybe long as you’re speaking up, we could speak up for the other stuff that’s quietly being attacked in the House budget bill too. Please?
