LWCF Success in Kansas

The Land and Water Conservation Fund has helped protect some of Kansas’ most treasured places.  Kansas has received approximately $53 million over the past four decades, protecting places such as the Marais des Cygnes National Wildlife Refuge and the Fort Scott National Historic Site.

Brown vs. Board of Education National Historic Site

Community leaders in Kansas and civil rights leaders across the country worked through a public-private partnership to protect the Monroe School, the focal site of the landmark Brown vs. Board of Education ruling by the Supreme Court.  LWCF funds acquired this iconic American site and private funds went to restoration of the schoolhouse.

Economic Benefits

Active outdoor recreation is an important part of the Kansas economy. Each year, 544,000 sportspersons and 816,000 wildlife watchers combine to spend $839 million on wildlife-associated recreation in Kansas.  This is an integral part of the American outdoor recreation economy, which contributes $730 billion annually to the U.S. economy, supports 6.4 million American jobs (1 out of every 20 jobs in the U.S.), and stimulates 8 percent of all consumer spending, according to the Outdoor Industry Association.
