LWCF Success in STATE

The Land and Water Conservation Fund has helped protect some of North Carolina’s most treasured places.  North Carolina has received approximately $227 million over the past four decades, protecting places such as the Cape Hatteras National Seashore and the Great Dismal Swamp National Wildlife Refuge.

Pisgah National Forest

From the forested crown of Mt. Mitchell, highest peak east of the Mississippi, to the spectacular purple rhododendrons of Craggy Gardens, Pisgah National Forest protects North Carolina’s rugged mountain heritage.  Many projects in the forest have acquired key inholdings, which help to protect the forest from overdevelopment and pollution.  Located within the forest, the clean, clear waters of Lake James provide recreation activities to visitors and ensure ongoing tourism for local communities. Land and Water Conservation Fund projects like this protect America’s special places, promote healthy lifestyles, and help sustain local economies.

Economic Benefits

Active outdoor recreation is an important part of the North Carolina economy.  The Outdoor Industry Association has found that active outdoor recreation contributes more than $7.5 billion annually to the state’s economy, supports 95,000 jobs across North Carolina, generates $430 million in annual state tax revenue and produces $6.1 billion annually in retail sales and services across North Carolina.  The U.S. Census Bureau reports that each year over 3.4 million people participated in hunting, fishing, and wildlife watching in North Carolina contributing $2.7 billion to the state economy.  With full LWCF funding, North Carolina’s outdoor recreation economy will stay strong and continue to create sustainable long-term economic growth.
